Help for NotchPrompter on the Mac and iPhone.
Getting started
- Open NotchPrompter. The prompter appears at the top of your screen, under the camera.
- Click the red microphone and allow microphone and speech recognition access.
- Read your script out loud. The text follows your voice.
Hover over the prompter to see its buttons: back to top, microphone, play, pencil (editor) and settings.
The text doesn't follow my voice
- Check that the bars next to the notch move when you talk. If not, choose the right microphone in System Settings → Sound → Input.
- Open Settings in the prompter and check the Voice language. "Automatic" picks the language of your script.
- If you went off script, click the word you are on. The prompter continues from there.
- Allow access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and → Speech Recognition.
It asks me to turn on Dictation
NotchPrompter recognises speech on your Mac, so your voice never leaves it. macOS only allows this when Dictation is on: System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. If you'd rather not turn it on, choose Use Apple's Servers, or turn off Recognise speech on this Mac only in Settings → Privacy.
How do I record myself?
Hover over the prompter and click the record button (the circle), or press C. After a 3-2-1 countdown it films you with the camera and microphone while the text follows your voice. Click it again to stop. Each take is saved in Movies › NotchPrompter. To record the screen, or the screen and the camera together, choose it under Record in Settings → Recording. There you can also choose to save subtitles (.srt) with each take, and to light your face with the screen.
I can't see the prompter in my screen recording
That is on purpose, so your audience can't see it. To show it, turn off Hide the prompter from screen sharing and recordings in Settings.
How do I change the size?
Drag the left, right or bottom edge of the prompter, or a bottom corner. Text size is in the settings popover (the slider button), or press ⌘ + and ⌘ −.
Can I add notes to myself?
Yes. Put them in parentheses or brackets, like (pause) or [smile]. The prompter shows them in smaller italics, and voice-follow doesn't wait for you to say them. It moves past them as you read on.
Where are my scripts?
Click the pencil in the prompter, or choose File → Edit Scripts. They are saved automatically on your Mac, and sync with your iPhone through iCloud. To keep them as Markdown files in a folder you choose, turn on Keep scripts as files in a folder in Settings → Scripts. To keep a copy, right-click a script and choose Export.

NotchPrompter for iPhone
Pick a script and tap Open in Prompter. The script sits at the top of the screen, under the front camera. Tap the microphone to follow your voice, or choose Scroll and tap play. The Aa button sets the text size and speed. The red button records a take. Your takes stay in the app, where you can trim them, add captions and save them to Photos.
What is free on iPhone, and how do I restore my purchase?
The prompter, voice-follow, recording, trimming and captions are free, as much as you like, with no watermark. If you want to support the app, you can get Pro. It adds 1080p and 4K, music, voiceover and more editing tools, by the month, by the year or with one payment. You can cancel a subscription at any time in the Settings app: tap your name, then Subscriptions. If you bought Pro before, open Settings (the gear) and tap Restore Purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account.
